I make chain maille and beaded jewelry and have lots of supplies on hand

Posted by MarthaCat · Location-independent

I love making jewelry with chain maille (jump rings) and beads, and I have lots of supplies ready to go. I’m happy to try almost any project. What matters to me is making something people will use, rather than something that ends up in a drawer or gathers dust in a shop. I’d love to hear your ideas, or work with another maker on something together.

Would be great to see some:) With that type of craft I find what works best is some signature style or item - since there is so much of everything online. Something that is very You, that is unique, that people will look at and recognise. Doesn't mean you don't do other things but it's like your mark.

Brilliant, love the pictures! So here is what I mean, that green one is quite unique, looks like a snake! So if you have a signature, something you are unique in - say animal pattern, here is how it could look - imagine different prints like that?

I'm gonna stop here but you get the idea:)) Not that the others are not great, they are each unique and even more complex but they are all different - to be successful and stand out you're better off being The one person who does X, then just small print - you can do anything else on demand.

Here's another collaboration idea: have you considered making decorative accessories for historical reenactment groups or fantasy costume designers? Chain maille techniques would fit naturally with medieval or fantasy aesthetics, and you could develop a small collection of costume pieces rather than conventional jewellery. You might even find customers among tabletop gaming enthusiasts who attend conventions in costume.
