New in Davis: a software tester who loves finding what breaks (and escape rooms)

Posted by Oscar L. · Location-independent

Hi! I'm Oscar, and I just moved to Davis, CA. By day I'm a QA / software tester, which mostly means I get paid to find what breaks before anyone else does. I genuinely love that moment when something cracks in a way nobody expected. Outside of work I mentor international students with ISMP Davis, helping them settle into a new place (which, having just moved myself, I can relate to). I'm also planning a May 2027 wedding with my fiancée Emily, and our favorite date night is an escape room. I speak English and Cantonese. What I bring: a careful tester's eye for websites, apps and new products, an honest first-time-user reaction, and a bilingual voice if you're trying to reach Cantonese-speaking folks. Happy to swap notes, test something you're building, or team up on a fun local idea in Davis or Sacramento. Question for you: what's the best escape room you've ever done, and did you actually get out?

Hi!…

Why I’m posting this

New town, new people. I'd love to meet curious folks, trade ideas, and maybe build or test something together.

Funny, in a way finding what breaks and escape rooms kind of go together:)) I am not an escape room fan and it's even getting problematic since my kids are and I am always the one to say nope, not going..oh well. But on the testing software - the fact you are bilingual - you should absolutely use that as a unique selling point, it's an advantage you have for a very specific audience in that you can not only test their software but catch badly translated copy. My two cents:)

You know what might be an interesting combination of your skills and hobbies? Testing escape-room booking systems or even the digital puzzles used in escape rooms. You'd probably notice usability problems that ordinary testers miss because you actually enjoy these experiences. Another possibility is helping international students in Davis discover local activities through a bilingual guide. Have you found any escape rooms around Sacramento worth recommending yet?
