I Care About Online Safety. What Could We Do with That?
Posted by masud mahi · Location-independent
I spend time learning about security awareness and how people can protect themselves online. Something I've noticed is that people use the internet every day without always knowing how to spot a scam, recognize a suspicious link, or tell when someone is trying to trick them. And honestly, I think making people aware of these things shouldn't have to be complicated. I've been thinking about how to make online safety easier to understand and more interesting to learn. Maybe through simple visual content, real-life examples, interactive activities, or something completely different. I don't have a finished product or a big business plan. What I have is an interest in security awareness and a desire to explore what I could do with it.
I'm curious to hear what other people might come up with. Maybe there's an idea here that could grow into something genuinely useful.

I want to explore simple ways to help people recognize online threats and stay safe in the digital world.

This is very relevant especially to kids, a way to do good and earn something in the process would be to do some simple guides that you can distribute to schools - most have some awareness about the issue but the majority don't do nowhere near enough. As a parent I can tell you for sure I'd have no issue paying for any materials, online classes, any activity that the school can introduce that teaches kids about online safety. The fact that it comes from the school gives it credibility - so for you it would be a question of presenting that well and getting those partnerships.
there was a post here about a WhatsApp assistant, you two could turn it into a little scam checker where people just forward a weird message and ask

You could always make short eBooks and self-publish them through Amazon!
Short eBooks are making people tons of money right now, and it's pretty simple to learn.
I self-published a 99-page eBook (and paperback) on Amazon covering remote side hustles. I followed the directions on Kindle Direct Publishing, and any question I had through the process, I asked Microsoft Copilot to guide me through it, and it did!
I guarantee that eBooks on this topic would be popular, especially if you created ones for multiple age groups!
What about creating a little "spot the scam" game using fictional emails, messages and websites? Players would have to identify the warning signs, and after each answer you'd explain what made the message suspicious. You could have different levels for beginners and people who already know the basics. It might be particularly useful for community centres or libraries offering digital literacy workshops. You could build a simple prototype with ten examples and see how people respond.
