My Baking Hobby Could Become Something More

My Baking Hobby Could Become Something More

Posted by CoSell member · Location-independent

I bought baking equipment about a year ago because I loved making cakes and pastries for friends and family. I still enjoy it, but lately, my mixer, baking pans, and decorating tools have been sitting unused for weeks. My equipment cost around $450 in total, and I already have most of what I need to get started. I just haven't found the right way to turn this hobby into something bigger. I'd love to connect with someone who has experience selling baked goods, a small café, a customer base, or creative ideas for a baking project. Maybe we could test a weekend dessert box, create custom cakes for local events, or supply fresh pastries to nearby coffee shops. I'm open to other ideas, too. I'm not necessarily looking to start a full business overnight. I'd rather find someone interested in trying something together, sharing what we bring to the table, and seeing whether it grows into something worthwhile. If you have an idea that could work with my baking equipment and skills, I'd love to hear it. What could we make together?

You could have baking workshops held at your place, with small groups, I can tell you as a mom who's pretty bad at cooking I'd enjoy one of those - gives you some time to relax, in a creative way and can learn some things in the process:) If you are good at it you could also have some videos recorded, or/and written recipes with pictures etc - that is all digital products you can either sell or give away at your workshops.

Also - you mentioned equipment - you must have tried quite a few brands etc. to get to the equipment that actually works - reviews and tips on that can be also useful for your audience.

A friend of mine makes personalized cakes for special occasions, usually birthdays. She gets orders via sharing her service on local Facebook groups. You could do the same to begin a baking side hustle.

What if you partnered with a local florist? Flowers and cakes are often bought for exactly the same occasions, and you could test a small combined birthday or anniversary gift package. The florist already has customers and delivery arrangements, while you provide the baked goods. It could be a relatively simple way to test demand without opening a shop or building your own audience from scratch.
